Symphony: Live in Vienna (CD & DVD) [Amaray]

I am a HUGE fan of Sarah, partially listening to her music each day. I've enjoying seeing her concerts and then reliving the experience through her DVD. Symphony does not make this connection.

Her live concert tour for Symphony was the outstanding fusion of visual, music, and dance. So many concert songs left me in awe of the creation that totally moved me. This DVD has no connection to the concert tour. Be warned.

Instead it is a stiff, rigid visit to a cold church with cold people looking on with cold expressions. Sarah spends the entire concert walking up and down the aisle like some runaway bride. Lighting and candles try, and fail, to bring depth to the visuals. The same camera angles are used again and again and, yet, again. Boring. I can't even describe the audience. It is full of people in winter coats and scarfs. They have the most non-expressive faces that just bring the mood down, down, down. I just took another look at them and wanted to scream. You are with Sarah, show some emotion.

I am hugely disappointed by this DVD. Don't buy, unless you like seeing Sarah in concert with no dancers, no costume changes, no expressive audience, no set changes, and finally, NO lifts in the air above the audience like a angel.

Editorial Review :: In January 2008, Sarah Brightman recorded and filmed Symphony -- Live in Vienna within the mystical walls of Stephansdome Cathedral in the heart of where classical music evolved -- Vienna, Austria. Renowned for its awe-inspiring Gothic architecture, the cathedral was the perfect setting to enter the magical world of Symphony lead by the voice of the beautiful, gothic-angel. The concert includes repertoire from her album Symphony and some of her most popular songs ("Phantom of the Opera," "Time to Say Goodbye").

I loved this CD because it reminds me of the music played at the fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas.

I was actually in the audience for the recording of the "Live From Las Vegas" Harem World Tour Recording... I assure you it was nothing short of spectacular. I can actually hear myself shouting in a couple of spots. You get complete value for your $ when buying anything done by Sarah B.

I'm a Sarah Brightman fan, as well as traditional opera singers. I have a picture of Callas in my room. Anyway, this was quite a disappointment for me. I guess I didn't really like her interpretation of some of the songs.I'm totally open to crossover artists singing classics; I'm not a purist on this. But her voice sounded so weak on almost every track except maybe Time to Say Goodbye, which I thought to be the best track on the CD. I was anxious to hear her La Wally but whoa it sounded like she was gasping for air at every possible moment. Ave Maria was well, I think she could've done better on that one. I would say Winterlight comes second best in the CD. Her rendition of Rusalka's op.114(La Luna) was...not so good. I've listened to many, many versions of this Dvorak piece and hers is at the very bottom. Fleming's as well as the criticized Netrebko's version(I don't know why it's so criticized, I think her tone is perfect!) are my favourites. her Nessun Dorma was OK, but by track 13, I knew what to expect. Just for the sake of comparison, I would suggest listening to Frank Tenaglia's version of it(it's available on youtube). Overall this CD was definitely not Sarah's best. I love her music and Battle, Fleming, and Callas, but the latter people win this one. And as a compliment i will say that I can't even begin to imagine if an opera singer like say, Netrebko, was to try and sing something like Angel of Music. I think it would sound equally as... 'strange', if you will, as Sarah's La Luna.

Love this CD! Every song on it is great. I listen to it over and over. Sarah's voice is fantastic! She can sing pop music as well as classical. Her vocal range is excellent. I'm not good at writing reviews,as you can see, but I love this CD so much, I felt I should write one. Buy this CD! You won't regret it!
